International Conference "COLLECTIONS - SCHOLARS -INTERPRETATIONS"

2-3 May, Georgian State Museum of Folk and Applied Arts and Institute of Art History and Theory, Tbilisi State University with support of Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation invites to attend the International Conference COLLECTIONS - SCHOLARS -INTERPRETATIONS

Collections have always been the subject of scholarly interest and interpretation. The study of artifacts stored in different museums and galleries across the world contributed to the advancement of methodologies and creation of new disciplines. From art history, ethnology, anthropology, natural and technological history to museum studies and practices, collections have always been the core around which all these disciplined developed. The scientific interpretation of various collections on the other hand, helps to make museums and galleries matter.  New scholarly findings and their interpretation as a part of the display, gain more and more importance in making the collections more familiar and fascinating for wider public.  The international conference will highlight both the role of collections in the advancement of new methodologies and scientific approaches and the contribution of science in the development of these institutions. In particular the conference will address such issues as:  
 
•    What is the role of collections in the development of science?
•    What are the recent advancements in studying collections?
•    How does the scholarly interpretation contribute to the development of museums and galleries?
•    Which methodological approaches are best suited to this area of investigation.

The conference will be divided into principal thematic sessions and we invite paper proposals of case studies or broader analyses.

The international conference seeks to bring together researchers from different disciplines, chronological periods and geographic areas.
