Georgian Parliamentary Chairman Davit Usupashvili delivered a public lecture “Our State” at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on February 12. The lecture was delivered in frames of “the First Public Lecture of the Year.” TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava, students, professors and invited guests attended the event.
TSU Rector Vladimer Papava said: “If February 8 is the day of foundation of the Tbilisi State University, February 12 is the day of launching the university activities. Ivane Javakhishvili delivered the first lecture at the university just on this day. We have restored this tradition. From now on, every February 12 successful alumni will deliver “the First Public Lecture of the Year” at TSU. This time we chose Davit Usupashvili. As expected, his lecture proved extremely interesting. He focused on the most comprehensive problems facing our country and the ways of their solution.”
“Although I got accustomed to public speaking long ago, I have never been so excited before. My words have never been so emotional before. My address at the university continues the tradition launched by Ivane Javakhishvili. This is a huge respect and responsibility. Because of our past and present day I chose a topic “Our State”. We, the civil society, should look after our state. We will live to see our own state,” Parliamentary Chairman Davit Usupashvili said.
After the public lecture, TSU Rector Vladimer Papava awarded Davit Usupashvili with the university medal and a diploma for delivering “the First Public Lecture of the Year.”
According to the rule of holding “the First Public Lecture of the Year,” a public lecture can be delivered by university alumni – incumbent academic personnel, emeritus professors, famous public and political figures, prominent representatives of art and culture.
A public lecture is delivered annually on February 12. Ivane Javakhishvili delivered the first lecture just on February 12, 1918. A printed version of Ivane Javakhishvili’s first lecture published by the TSU Publishing House was distributed among the participants during Usupashvili’s lecture.
