TSU Student Self-Governance Holds Special Briefing

President of TSU Student Self-Governance, Shalva Sabauri and Vice Presidents Paata Bakhturidze and Tornike Tsinadze quit their positions.

“We keep our promise made during the crisis period for the university, according to which if then Rector Vladimer Papava resigned, we would reciprocate. Today the situation is relatively calm; therefore, we keep our word and quit our positions,” Shalva Sabauri said at a special briefing on May 18.

He also noted that the date of TSU Student Self-Governance elections has been postponed. “The elections will be held no later than six months from now, because there is no established position – whether any amendments will be made to the Law on Higher Education. We will get involved in any discussion related to modernization of self-governance,” he added.

Shalva Sabauri slammed the meeting between the Education Minister, the PM’s representative and members of student movement Auditorium 115. “I do not welcome the meeting of government members only with one group of students. The Education Minister is interfering in those processes, where she should not interfere. We will continue our struggle to protect real autonomy of the university.”

Former President of Student Self-Governance Shalva Sabauri also commented on the Public Defender’s conclusion concerning the lawsuit filed in the Constitutional Court saying that “the Ombudsman made an inadequate and incompetent statement. His statement contains a fundamental error – when speaking about Student Self-Governance, he fails to distinguish a union and an elective institution.”

Shalva Sabauri also said that he and the Vice Presidents will continue their struggle for the university’s autonomy without any statuses, just as ordinary members of the Student Self-Governance.
