World Autism Awareness Day

In connection with the World Autism Awareness Day, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) held a meeting and public discussion on April 3 with parents of children with autism spectrum disorder.

The event was organized by the TSU Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences and Tamar Gagoshidze Center for Neuropsychology. Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder, students, neuropsychologists, speech therapists and occupational therapists attended the event.

“We have arranged this meeting specifically for those parents, who have children with autism spectrum disorder, who have questions about the development and well-being of their children. The meeting will be held in a question/answer format that will ensure open communication between parents and specialists. The meeting will help us be useful to the people with special needs and give answers to their questions,” Professor Tamar Gagoshidze, dean of the TSU Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences said.

Various issues, problems and solutions were discussed during the meeting. Tamar Amiranashvili, a parent, who also participated in the discussion, said that there are a number of services provided in Tbilisi, the state program is being implemented, but not all parents are aware about it. Just therefore, direct links between specialists and parents are extremely important. “I, as an interested person, am following closely and trying to attend all events related to this issue,” she noted.

World Autism Awareness Day is an internationally recognized day marked on April 2.
