Students Scientific Conference “Media, Law and Ethics: Freedom without Borders?”

A joint students scientific conference of the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) and Deutsche Welle Akademie “Media, Law and Ethics: Freedom without Borders?” was opened at TSU on June 4.

“The conference is dedicated to media law and is being held with the support of Deutsche Welle Akademie. Its main goal is to enhance student understanding about freedom of speech and democratic transformations ongoing in our country in this direction. What is most important, it is an interdisciplinary conference and journalists, as well as young lawyers and psychologists are participating in it,” TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava said.  

“We have a successful cooperation with TSU and we are glad that we managed to create a program which really helps students, as well as teachers, lecturers to strengthen their skills in media law. Media law is an important issue for journalists and lawyers and we are glad that Deutsche Welle Akademie helps people in Georgia deepen their skills in this direction,” Petra Rashkevich, project manager for DW Akademie’s Asia and Europe Department said.

The interdisciplinary conference involves the following panel discussions: freedom of information; media and human rights; language of hatred; judiciary and media; media and ethics.

Future lawyers, media and mass communications researchers, psychologists are participating in the conference. The organizers selected 21 best speakers out of about 60 applications received from six higher educational institutions. BA, MA and PhD students are participating in the conference. Prizes will be awarded for the best question and for active participation in a discussion.

The conference has been organized by Deutsche Welle Akademie, a leading organization for international media development, as well as TSU Faculties of Social and Political Sciences and Law.

The conference will end on June 5.
