A new rule of funding student projects will be
enforced at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University starting 2017.
Upon initiative of Rector of TSU, Giorgi Sharvashidze, a special council
will be set up aimed to ensure transparency and parity; the council
will include the representatives of non-governmental and international
organizations. The council will develop the criteria for funding student
projects. “It will once and forever settle the problem about biased
distribution of TSU finances and the mechanism of open, transparent,
impartial distribution of the university resources will be introduced.
Student projects will be funded through a grant competition,” Giorgi
Sharvashidze explained. He also noted at the news briefing that Deputy
Rector of TSU, Mikheil Chkhenkeli will lead the council.
In 2017, special attention will be paid to students’ scientific and
research activities. Important amendments were made to the 2017 budget
of TSU – expenses were reduced in the parts of business trips (-26.9),
office (-11.15%), representation (-30.05), as well as remuneration. The
funding for students’ participation in research activities has increased
significantly. The Rector said that this article has been separated in
the budget and in 2017, GEL 600 000 will be spent on student research.
In addition, budgetary funding was allocated to improve conditions at
the university’s student dormitory. Renovation of toilets and laundry
rooms was financed; washing machines were purchased. A resource center
with a library and computers will be arranged at the dormitory. Thus,
all students living there will have free access to Internet resources.
Students will have better conditions next year. The Rector said that
number of places available in the dormitory will be doubled; a new
catering facility will be opened, while new student cards will enable
students to enjoy various discounts.
