Presentation of Georgian Political Corpus

Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) hosted a presentation of a student project “Georgian Political Corpus.” The project aims at analyzing Georgian political speech using the examples of public speeches by Georgian politicians. A special program “Visualization of Statistical Analysis of Political Speeches” was also developed within the framework of the project. 28 students, mostly PhD and MA students from the Tbilisi State University, are involved in the project. Deputy Rector of TSU, Mikheil Chkhenkeli, TSU professors, students and invited guests attended the event.
Prof. Manana Tandashvili (Goethe University Frankfurt), the project manager, said that “we have accumulated a lot of materials during the election period to analyze political speeches, to compare the speeches of various parties according to various criteria.”
TSU Rector’s adviser, Darejan Tvaltvadze noted that the corpus, created on the basis of public speeches and addresses of politicians, is interesting not only for linguists, but also for philologists.
“The research enabled us to analyze the speeches made by politicians according to linguistic characteristics, to see what are the problems faced by politicians when making their speeches, what may obstruct them in expressing their opinions and delivering them to the listeners,” PhD student from the Faculty of Humanities, Elene Kiknadze said.
The project "Georgian Political Corpus" was created at TSU in 2016 within the framework of the winter school Digital Kartvelology funded by Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation. The school was dedicated to the key principles and methods of creating thematic corpora.
