The 8th International Symposium ‘Modern Problems of Literary Studies’ was opened at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University on September 24.
Head of the Institute of Georgian Literature, Irma Ratiani said that “this conference has already gained serious international and local support. Scientists and persons interested in their national cultures are equally worried about the fate of their national cultures and literatures under globalization. This symposium is held annually and I am happy that number of participants as well as trust towards this conference has been increasing from year to year.”
“A very important symposium is being held today. The interest towards the problems discussed at this conference is great. I am glad that this tradition continues. Besides the fact that a lot of scientific contacts are being established, it promotes better networking between scientists providing them with an opportunity to work over the problems of their common concern,” Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Giorgi Sharvashidze said.
The main topic of the symposium is “National Literatures and the Process of Cultural Globalization.” The following panel topics will be discussed: Globalization and the Problem of Cultural Integration; National Literary Canon and the Mechanisms of Cultural Globalization; Weltliteratur and the Issue of National Literatures; Literature without Borders?– Pro et Contra. A roundtable will also be held on a topic: Communicative Function of Translation in the Process of Cultural Globalization.”
139 scientists from various countries (a total of 19 countries - USA, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Macedonia, Slovenia, Iran, Turkey, Qatar, Kazakhstan), as well as representatives from various university and research centers of Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi and Telavi are participating in the symposium.
The symposium has been organized by the Shota Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature; it will last until September 27.
