Cape Verdean Film Screening at TSU: Batuque [Júlio Silvão Tavares, 2007]

On Friday, 5th May, at 19:00, in Celebration of the International Day of Portuguese Language, TSU- Camoes Language Center and Brazilian Embassy in Tbilisi are organizing the Cape Verdean Film Screening at TSU, Building 1, room 101.

The session will be preceded by a brief presentation of the film by Mrs. Isabel Gaspar, Director of TSU Camões Portuguese Language Center, Nata Kurkhuli, Student of Portuguese Language at TSU

Batuque [Júlio Silvão Tavares, 2007]

Característico da ilha de Santiago, o Batuque tem origem nos primeiros escravos trazidos para a ilha no século XV e é a mais antiga manifestação cultural de Cabo Verde. Relegado ao espaço rural durante a colonização por ser considerado ofensivo da boa moral, o Batuque foi reprimido e proibido, mas sobreviveu graças à resistência e à constante passagem de testemunho de geração em geração. Muito para além de uma mera visão histórica, o filme oferece-nos momentos de grande intimidade com a prática do Batuque e com o grupo Raiz de Tambarina, um dos mais antigos da ilha de Santiago.
Entre ensaios e celebrações, através da sua vida quotidiana, os membros do grupo – um motorista de camião, uma empregada de limpeza e algumas vendedoras de peixe do mercado – fazem-nos partilhar a sua paixão pelo Batuque e descobrir Cabo Verde de ontem e de hoje.

Characteristic of the island of Santiago, the Batuque has originated in the first slaves brought to the island in the XV century and is the oldest cultural manifestation of Cape Verde. Relegated to rural areas, during colonization Batuque has been considered offensive to good morals and was repressed and forbidden, but survived thanks to resistance and the constant passing of testimony from generation to generation. Far beyond a mere historical vision, the film offers us moments of great intimacy with the practice of Batuque and with the group Tamborina Roots - one of the oldest on the island of Santiago. Between rehearsals and celebrations, through their daily lives, the members of the group - a truck driver, a cleaning maid and some fish vendors on the market - make us share their passion for Batuque and discover Cape Verde of yesterday and today.
