The below evening is informal gathering with José Luís Peixoto to “Zoestan”, which will be held on Tuesday, the 16th December, at 19:00 [5 Vakhtang Beridze str.].

During the evening the short passages from Galveias in Portuguese with Georgian translation will be read. The passages will be chosen randomly by the writer, the translator and Portuguese language students, or anyone who would like to participate in the evening event.

José Luís Peixoto is Portuguese one of the most acclaimed and bestselling contemporary novelists. This year, with the initiative and support of TSU – Camoes Center his latest novel Galveias has been translated into Georgian by Guranda Pachulia, and published by Bakur Sulakauri Publishing House.

Galveias is named after the small village in Southern Portugal where the author was born. It is considered by the national critics as one of the greatest novels about Portuguese rurality and indeed identity, unfolding, page after page, the universality of the microcosms he creates.

We all have a place where life turns out for the best. Every world has its centre. My place is no better than yours, but it is more important. Our special places can’t be compared because they are too intimate. Where they exist, only we can see them. There are layers upon layers of invisibleness over the shapes that everyone can see. There’s no point trying to explain our special place; nobody will understand it. Words cannot bear the weight of this truth, a fertile earth that descends from the mists of time, a spring stretching all the way to a future without death.

This beautifully written novel is brimming with astute observations and depictions of human behavior, of life itself and how it is shaped and changed. The characters that inhabit the captivating village of Galveias inevitably draw the reader in with their intertwining stories that come together as one.
