PACE President Visits TSU
Anne Brasseur, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), visited the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on April 7.
During the visit Anne Brasseur met with TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava and then gave a public lecture to TSU students on a topic “Democracy, Human Rights and the Rule of Law More Important than Ever”.
PACE President spoke about the difference between the Council of Europe and the European Union, as well as about the Council of Europe’s activities, its key values: human rights, rule of law and democracy. She also focused on the important reforms and steps taken by Georgia in this direction.
“I am glad to have this opportunity to meet with students and give a lecture to them; to speak about the significance of the Council of Europe, because the Council of Europe is a genuinely European institution with 47 member states”, PACE President Anne Brasseur said and added that talking with young people is very important for her.
“Democracy is a very difficult phenomenon. It is a permanent process and our European orientation requires that people understand the meaning of democracy and human rights. Therefore, the today’s meeting was extremely important. It was Ms. Anne Brasseur’s initiative to meet with our students, because she always seeks meetings with this audience during her visits to various countries,” TSU Rector Vladimer Papava said.
By the end of the lecture, the PACE President answered students’ questions and spoke about the importance of their role in politics. Chairman of the Parliament’s Committee for European Integration, Zviad Kvachantiradze, lawmakers and PACE representatives attended the event.
