Georgian State Minister, TSU Rector Open Memorial at TSU

Rector of the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Academician Vladimer Papava and State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Davit Bakradze opened a memorial commemorating those employees and students of the Tbilisi State University, who fell for the freedom of their motherland. Director of the Information Center on NATO and EU, Elene Gotsadze, as well as TSU students and professors attended the opening ceremony.

After opening the memorial, State Minister David Bakradze met with TSU students to discuss the issues of Georgia’s integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures, Association Agreement and implementation of Annual National Programme with NATO.

TSU Rector Vladimer Papava said that “Georgia’s independence passes through its western orientation. Many generations of Georgian people had dreamt about independent Georgia. Upon the initiative of TSU students, a monument was opened in honor of the university employees and students, who fell for the freedom of their motherland. It is quite symbolic that State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Davit Bakradze attended the opening ceremony. Opening of the memorial is equal to paying a tribute to our past, while meeting with the students and delivering a public lecture is equal to foreseeing our future.”

“The Tbilisi State University was always standing at the forefront of the struggle for Georgia’s independence, its European choice. The university has made significant sacrifices to achieve this goal. This struggle is still underway and it will reach its destination without any victims,” State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Davit Bakradze said.

Iakob Nikoladze is the author of the memorial. The work created by a famous Georgian sculptor in 1908 was sculpted in bronze by sculptor Guram Nikoladze.
The memorial commemorates all those university students and employees, who had been actively fighting for Georgia’s independence since 1918.

The idea of erecting the memorial belongs to TSU students and the university administration actively supported its implementation.
