TSU Rector Meets Student Protesters

Rector of the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU), Academician Vladimer Papava met with a group of students holding a protest rally outside TSU during the event marking the launch of a new academic year on September 14.

The protesters focused on the current situation at the university and persisting problems. Vladimer Papava agreed to the demand of student protesters concerning state funding for the university. He said that TSU has officially applied to relevant agencies over budget financing. “We are intensively working with the Ministry of Education and Science. I am sure that a clause will appear in the country’s budget on providing funding for the universities, because it is essential for the development of the university system,” Vladimer Papava said.

When asked by students about the university’s electronic bases, Papava responded that the electronic system works smoothly. It has been two years already that TSU resolved all technical problems related to selection of subjects by students. Only objective limitations have been left and it should be noted that many European universities also face similar problems.
Students asked the Rector to introduce one-window principle claiming that it would help settle bureaucratic problems. Rector Papava also spoke about a new challenge facing the university after signing the Association Agreement with EU – the university’s authorization under European standards that on its part requires implementation of certain administrative measures.

The participants of the meeting also raised other issues, including tuition fees, textbooks, their translations, profile subjects, etc.

TSU Rector Vladimer Papava expressed readiness to meet with students in an enlarged format to discuss any problems. “Before that, we will hold a meeting with the representatives of all faculties and administrative departments,” he added.
By the Rector’s decision, an enlarged meeting with students will be held at 3pm on September 29. Representatives of the faculties and administration will attend the meeting.
