Scientific Conference Dedicated to Iakob Gogebashvili
On October 27 the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU)
hosted the first ever scientific conference in the field of Kartvelian
studies dedicated to Iakob Gogebashvili. The Iakob Gogebashvili
Scientific Prize in Kartvelian Studies was established with the
framework of the conference and Professor Giorgi Gogolashvili became the
first laureate. TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava, TSU
professors, students, public school teachers and pupils attended the
event.
“Today the university hosts a conference dedicated to the birthday of a famous Georgian public figure, Iakob Gogebashvili and by decision of TSU this conference will be held biennially. Moreover, the Iakob Gogebashvili Prize in Kartvelian Studies was awarded to famous Georgian scientist, Giorgi Gogolashvili. We are holding this conference for the first time this year and it will become traditional at TSU,” Rector Papava said.
Professor Giorgi Gogolashvili, laureate of the Iakob Gogebashvili Prize, said that “development of Kartvelian fields is a priority for us and today we are laying the foundation for a very good tradition. It is a great honor for me to be awarded the Iakob Gogebashvili Prize that is a supreme award for a Georgian language specialist. I want to thank everyone, who appreciated my modest contribution to the Georgian language studies with such a great award.”
“I am very glad that we are marking the 175th anniversary of Iakob Gogebashvili. We decided to hold this event regularly. It should be noted that not only scientists, but public school teachers and pupils, as well as students and PhD students are also participating in the conference,” TSU Professor Ketevan Chkuaseli said.
The purpose of the conference is to increase the involvement of students, teachers and pupils in the scientific field of Kartvelian studies. “Similar scientific conferences promote better quality of youth education as well as higher level of education in the country. It should be noted that young people living in the regions do not frequently participate in similar events. Therefore, I keep hope that regional representatives will actively get involved in similar conferences,” Luka Kazanchi, pupil from public school No 15 in Poti, said.
During the event TSU professors, doctors, PhD students, MA students and invited teachers presented reports on Iakob Gogebashvili’s contribution to the development of the Georgian language, integrated teaching of the language and a subject in the country’s non-Georgian schools, shortcomings of national curricula and the ways to overcome them, problems related to teaching the native language, etc.
