Mediation and Arbitration – National and Global Challenges

An international conference Mediation and Arbitration – National and Global Challenges was opened at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on June 9.

The conference has been organized by the TSU National Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution (NCDR) and it is being held in cooperation with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), South Texas College of Law, East-West Management Institute (EWMI) and Judicial Independence and Legal Empowerment Project (JILEP).

“During the conference, an international experience will be shared about how legal issues should be settled in mediation and arbitration. It is important that Georgian specialists from various agencies, as well as foreign experts, TSU students and professors are participating in the conference,” TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava said.

Professor Michael Tsur from Hamline University said that mediation is one of the developing spheres in the world and this conference aims at raising public awareness about alternative dispute resolution, as well as reviewing the key trends and achievements of mediation and arbitration at the international level.
Deputy Chairman of the Tbilisi Court of Appeals, Lasha Kalandadze said: “In Georgian reality, the means of alternative dispute resolution– arbitration enjoys huge popularity”. He also noted another means of alternative dispute resolution – mediation, which enables the parties to settle their disputes with the help of the third, neutral party. “Similar meetings and conferences, which are being held at the university, will significantly promote further popularization of these two institutions and I think that eventually they will take a relevant place in terms of dispute resolution,” Lasha Kalandadze said.

Georgian and foreign experts working in the field of alternative dispute resolution addressed the international conference Mediation and Arbitration – National and Global Challenges.
