TSU Rector Meets Students

Rector of the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Academician Vladimer Papava held the second open meeting with students on March 27 to review his past performance and answer the questions from young people.

In his opening remarks TSU Rector Vladimer Papava discussed a wide range of issues, including academic registration and bases, translation of textbooks and a new initiative – student scientific circles, scientific and student forums planned in the direction of Kartvelology, rehabilitation of TSU Building III, post-doctoral studies, financing of doctoral programs, building of a new housing for students, professors and foreign specialists, etc.

During a question and answer session students focused on a variety of issues and problems – from the condition of toilets to the qualification and competences of professors.

Traditionally, the students from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences were most active. They claimed that the faculty faced the key problem of protracted dean’s elections. Students also complained about the rule of `composition of competition commissions, financing of PhD programs, qualification of lecturers, availability of syllabuses, activities of various student groups, student projects, as well as reduction of bureaucracy in the university’s administration. The TSU Rector ruled out politically motivated staff selection. “Everyone has the right to support this or that political force. But this should not hamper the educational-scientific process at the university. I am against politically motivated staff selection,” he said.

TSU Rector and representatives of the faculty answered the questions from students. During the meeting the participants managed to reach an agreement on a number of issues. By the end of the meeting TSU Rector Papava noted that similar meetings would be held periodically. “The university is facing certain tasks and problems. I want to receive your proposals, to see all the problems through your eyes. I should definitely fulfill all those obligations which I undertook during the pre-election period. I need recommendations, remarks and proposals from you in order to look at the problems from various angles. This will help us settle them,” Papava said.
