Exhibition of Ivane Javakhishvili’s Works

An exhibition of Ivane Javakhishvili’s works was held at the library of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on April 22 in frames of the events dedicated to the 140th anniversary of Ivane Javakhishvili.

Acting Rector of TSU, Darejan Tvaltvadze, academic and administrative staff, students and representatives of the TSU library attended the event.

“TSU plans a series of events in connection with the 140th anniversary of Ivane Javakhishvili and one of such events is an exhibition of Ivane Javakhishvili’s works. A new exhibition space has been opened in the building of our library, where Ivane Javakhishvili’s works represent the first exposition,” Acting Rector of TSU, Darejan Tvaltvadze said.

A catalogue of Ivane Javakhishvili’s works and an encyclopedic dictionary were presented during the event.

“We have renewed Ivane Javakhishvili’s dictionary released 10 years ago, as well as one work created by Ivane Javakhishvili in the early 20th century, which was in Russian. These publications will be available to a broad circle of readers,” Academician Vladimer Papava said.

All the books and multivolume works created by Ivane Javakhishvili, also articles and publications issued in various magazines and newspapers were exhibited. The oldest publication is dated 1899 and it represents Russian translation of the text Wisdom of Balahvar. The Scientific Council of the University of Petersburg awarded Javakhishvili with a Gold Medal for his work printed in Moambe magazine in 1900 “The Activity of Andrew the Apostle and Saint Nino in Georgia.” It was Javakhishvili’s first recognition. One of the important exhibits is a handbag owned by Ivane Javakhishvili, which was handed over to the TSU Library by his descendants.
The exposition is the first attempt to fully exhibit Ivane Javakhishvili’s works published in 1899-2012.

Head of the TSU Library, Zurab Gaiparashvili said: “This year is especially important for the university. Its founder, famous public figure and great scientist, Ivane Javakhishvili would have turned 140. In this connection, 2016 has been declared as the Year of Ivane Javakhishvili and a series of events are being held.  One of these events is an exhibition of books and works with Ivane Javakhishvili being their author and editor. This is the first attempt to bring together the great scientist’s scientific works.”

The exhibition paved the way for opening a new space at the TSU Library, which will periodically host exhibitions of rare publications kept at the book depositories, as well as thematic exhibitions.
