Acting Rector of TSU Meets Students
Acting Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU),
Darejan Tvaltvadze held a meeting with students on April 28. During the meeting, the Acting Rector answered students’ questions, spoke about the elections planned at TSU (Academic Council, Senate, Rector), the issue of bringing the university statutes in compliance with the amendments to the Law on Higher Education. She said that the elections of the Academic Council will be held on May 11 under the existing rule – two professors from each faculty; after the amendments are made to the university statutes, which will then be approved by the Ministry of Education and Science, the new Academic Council will be composed, among others, of the representatives of scientific research institutes. By late July, in accordance with the amendments to the law, the university will have a 38-member or a 45-member Academic Council.
The Acting Rector also focused on the changes in learning process and curricula, lack of textbooks in Georgian and finding solution to this problem; autonomy of the university, etc. “The University should be autonomous. The University should have the right to decide its fate itself, to elect its governing bodies itself. I hope that TSU will be united in this process,” Darejan Tvaltvadze told the students.
During the meeting with students Darejan Tvaltvadze explained why she did not meet separate groups of students. “It would be wrong to meet separate groups of students. They cannot be divided on any grounds. All students have equal rights to express their opinions, to meet with the Acting Rector. Meeting with students is extremely necessary and important for me. I certainly knew what the students were thinking about, but it was very important that I received direct answers about their problems. Students wanted to hear from me about the ongoing developments at TSU, how long this so called transition period would last. It will be impossible to settle the problems without communication with students. Our key task is to return the planned processes to a legal framework,” Acting Rector Darejan Tvaltvadze said. She also noted that meetings with students will continue in the near future.
