Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance Visits TSU
Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance of Georgia, Giorgi Mgebrishvili held a meeting with students at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University on March 20. TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava, students and professors attended the event.
TSU Rector, Vladimer Papava said that “the Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance briefed the students on the ministry’s current activities; it will increase student awareness and their involvement in this direction. It is very important for our young generation to have direct communication with the minister in order to get first-hand information. We are sure that similar meetings will continue in future and other forms of cooperation will also be found.”
“I acquainted the students with the reforms planned in the penitentiary system in the near future. We also spoke about the situation in prisons and criminal subculture, which is an absolute emptiness and darkness in the 21st century,” Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance of Georgia, Giorgi Mgebrishvili said.
“As known, institutional reform of penitentiary system is planned. Its goal is to bring Georgia closer to the developed countries. For this purpose, besides isolating convicts from the society, it is essential to think about their re-socialization and education. This meeting is important because the minister himself provides information,” TSU student, Ana Gudadze said.
The Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance of Georgia spoke about the planned reform in the ministry aimed at comprehensive transformation of the penitentiary system, increasing social, legal and security guarantees for its staff. Minister Mgebrishvili also noted that he sees future employees of the penitentiary system in the students participating in the meeting. He said that “the ministry is open for talented, motivated young people to help them deepen their knowledge acquired at the university and to create a new, progressively thinking and western-oriented generation of the penitentiary system.”
The meeting ended with a discussion. Minister Mgebrishvili answered students’ questions.
