PM Meets Students Enrolled in Bachelor’s Degree Programs at San Diego State University
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili visited the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on September 17 to congratulate students enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs at San Diego State University (SDSU) on launching their studies. Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Tamar Sanikidze, TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava, Rector of Ilia State University Giga Zedania, Rector of Georgian Technical University Giorgi Prangishvili, representatives of the United States and San Diego State University in Georgia, students, professors and lecturers attended the event.
Thanks to funding from the Millennium Challenge Corporation, Georgian students are beginning a four year education program in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics that will give them a U.S. bachelor’s degree upon completion and provide them with a U.S. university education.
PM Garibashvili thanked the U.S. Government and the Millennium Challenge Corporation for cooperation and stressed the importance of development of engineering and technological fields in Georgia.
“San Diego State University is the first American university, which will introduce American standards and quality in education and provide American-style education to our young people. I am glad that engineering and technological specializations are becoming so popular among our young people. This is an extremely healthy tendency. It is important that students with highest scores selected just these specializations. The greatest assistance one can render to a friendly country is to contribute to its education sphere. I would like to express my gratitude to the United States and San Diego State University. Our government will support the students enrolled in this program as much as possible. Ultimately, you should apply your knowledge to strengthen our country,” PM Garibashvili said.
Public Affairs Officer at U.S. Embassy to Georgia, Courtney Austrian congratulated students on the launch of their studies and noted that the United States believes that the youth is an important resource of any country.
“This is the first ever program of its kind in Georgia, and symbolizes the close cooperation that exists between the U.S. and Georgian governments and both countries’ academic communities,” the U.S. Embassy to Georgia said on September 17.
“I thank the governments of Georgia and the United States for enabling our gifted young people to receive American education in Georgia. We are ready to promote your further education,” Education Minister Tamar Sanikidze said.
TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava said that “a new program has been launched; this is an engineering school and its partner along with three Georgian universities is San Diego State University. 55 students will undergo their studies at TSU. They are future engineers, who along with relevant diplomas from our universities will also receive American diplomas. It is a huge perspective and simultaneously very difficult.”
Dean of SDSU-Georgia, Ken Walsh wished students success in implementing their goals and noted that time will come when they will need these goals.
The project San Diego State University and Georgia 2020 is being implemented in frames of the second USD 140 million compact signed between the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation and Georgia in 2013. The compact seeks to improve the quality of education in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, “and increase the earning potential of Georgians through strategic investments from the start of a student’s general education to graduation from technical training and advanced degree programs.” Ilia State University and Georgian Technical University are also taking part in the program along with San Diego State University and Tbilisi State University.
