International Symposium ‘Media Rule’
New approaches to teaching media law, issues of copyright protection in media, peculiarities of coverage of judicial issues as well as local and international experience in media law are being discussed at the international symposium currently underway at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU).
The South Caucasus symposium and training in media law ‘Media Rule’ was opened by TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava on July 22. Georgian, German, Armenian and Azerbaijani delegates, professors, students, experts and journalists are participating in the symposium.
“Media is one of the most rapidly developing fields in Georgia and its legal grounds are very important. Naturally, there is a huge international experience and this conference is oriented to develop common understanding about legal grounds necessary for media development. I am sure that the conference will be interesting for its participants,” TSU Rector, Academician Vladimer Papava said.
“We are holding the conference, which is about media law. I think, after Georgia signed the Association Agreement with EU, this conference is a good opportunity for Georgian journalists and society to familiarize themselves with media law implemented by EU. Naturally, there are many laws concerning media, media freedom and media regulations. We are going to discuss those regulations at this conference, which are so important for the media,” Bettina Ruigies of Deutsche Welle Akademie said.
Mariam Gersamia, head of the journalism direction at the TSU Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, said that “this is the first time that the Tbilisi State University hosts the South Caucasus international symposium Media Rule. Generally, it is very important for the development of our democratic society and reforms to have free media, to help students improve their competences about media law and to enforce self-regulation mechanisms. Just these are the main topics that will be discussed at the present symposium,” Mariam Gersamia said.
On the sideline of the symposium, trainings will be held for students (on July 21-22), journalism professors (on July 23-24); media law forum will be held for German and Georgian experts and South Caucasus forum for Georgian, German, Armenian and Azerbaijani experts.
The cooperation with Deutsche Welle Akademie will promote the improvement of educational programs in journalism and mass communication directions, strengthening of internationalization component, improving staff and student skills, etc.
The symposium has been organized by Deutsche Welle Akademie and TSU and it will end on July 25.
