Daniela Tomaz’s Lecture - “Portuguese Intangible Cultural Heritage: an historical perspective on Fado and Cante”

On Friday, the 8th May, at 12:00, at the Portuguese Language Center at TSU [building II, room 203], Daniela Tomaz will present a conference on two music genres that have been recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage: Fado (2011) and Cante Alentejano (2014).

"The urban fado (fate) in Lisbon versus the countryside cante (song) in Alentejo, are deeply rooted in Portuguese culture today. These musical genres are also strongly entwined with some of Portugals most important history and social imaginary landmarks, such as the Carnation Revolution of 1974 or the rise of the Sebastianism with the battle of Alcácer-Quibir in 1578. But where did they spring from? And what makes a specific music genre such as Fado or Cante become a nations heritage?"

Daniela Tomaz is a musician [flutes/squared frame drum]. She is also the artistic director of the Lagos Music Academy, as well as three active ensembles, where she also plays: Ensemble Med (www.facebook.com/EnsembleMed), Voce Humana (www.facebook.com/vocehumanaensemble) and No Sopro do Vento, having performed in several venues in the Netherlands, France and Portugal.
