The Department of Culture and Sports of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University manages the sports and cultural activities for the university. The department is composed by innovative artistic groups as well as sports teams and divisions. Originally founded in 2007, this department was re-organized and given its current name in December 2010.
The Department of Culture and Sports, in close cooperation with the Students’ Self-Government organization, helps students to organize their free time and realize their artistic talents. At present, the university sponsors various performing groups including the choreographic ensemble -‘University’, boys’ vocal ensemble, the ‘University’ girls’ ensemble of Georgian traditional music - ‘Gordela’, the student theatre - ‘Skhveni’ and the Club of the Merry and the Quick-Witted. Under the auspices of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, the Department of Culture and Sports organizes an annual student festival called ‘Eris Khma’ (the voice of the nation) with participants coming from other universities and colleges throughout Georgia. Under the guidelines and with the encouragement from the Georgian Culture Days support group, the artistic and musical faculty of the university successfully participates in concerts and festivals held in many foreign countries.
